Sed Shortcomings

Deficiencies of UNIX sed
can't match across lines
can't easily modify original file
serious drawback for an editor!
match replacement not easily customizable
some versions, no word-boundary metacharacter 
makes it hard to avoid sub-string matches:
      sed 's/[   ]word([   .,;!?]/phrase/g'
avoid swords -> sphrases !
